You know, yesterday, I got into a discussion with some fellow actors about "honoring commitments". We were at a film shoot for a "low budget" independent film and the producer/director was frustrated over the fact that one of the actors that committed to the project was not going to make it because he had an opportunity to "earn some money". The problem was that he had a role that was critical to the film and we were on a tight schedule because one of our leads had to return to Colorado.
I can certainly understand the desire to work at a job that pays instead of showing up for a film shoot that doesn't but that's a little detail that should be provided to the production staff before they ask for a commitment and expect you to be there when you say you will.
Acting is a networking business and if actors fail to keep their commitments, the word will get around. Your lack of commitment impacts others who have committed their time and resources to be there, too. Filmmaking is a group effort and if you believe your presence can help it become successful, it's reasonable to think your absence is detrimental to that effort.
If you're going to commit -- to anything -- you must be prepared to meet your commitments.
